Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students at CIVIS member universities.

Academic Background

  • Theoretical knowledge or training background in: Linguistics, Philology, Literature, Culture, History, Archaeology, Digital Humanities, Computer Science, Anthropology, or related fields
  • Basic knowledge of historical linguistics preferred but not required
  • Motivated students from any humanities or social sciences background with interest in language evolution are welcome
  • Good level of written and spoken English (B2 level)
No prior computational experience required! We will guide you through all necessary technical skills during the course.

Enrollment Status

  • Must be a fully enrolled student at a CIVIS home university at the time of undertaking the programme
  • Applications are only available for students from the 11 CIVIS member universities

How to Apply

Complete your application in three simple steps:

  1. Prepare Your Documents

    You will need:

    • Academic CV (curriculum vitae)
    • Motivation letter (500-750 words)
  2. Complete the Online Application Form

    Fill in the application via the CIVIS mobility platform. Provide accurate information about your academic background and motivation for joining the programme.

  3. Submit When Applications Open

    Applications will be accepted starting September 2025. Check back for exact dates.

Selection Process

Evaluation Criteria

Student applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Motivation and Academic Interest: Clear articulation of interest in language change and digital humanities; alignment with applicant's academic trajectory and career aspirations
  • Academic Background: Relevant academic preparation from any humanities or social sciences field; demonstrated capacity for critical thinking and research
  • Interdisciplinary Potential: Openness to cross-disciplinary learning; appreciation for collaborative, international learning environments
  • Diversity and Perspective: Unique perspectives that enrich collective learning; communication skills adequate for international collaboration

Important: We aim to admit all qualified candidates who demonstrate genuine interest and academic preparation. Linguistic methods will be developed during the program.

Strong motivation and clear interest in the program's themes can compensate for limited prior exposure to linguistics or digital methods. We encourage applications from all humanities and social sciences backgrounds.

Erasmus+ Mobility Grant

Selected students will be supported by an Erasmus+ grant for physical mobility to Greece for the summer school (20-24 July 2026).

What the Grant Covers

  • Travel expenses to and from Naxos, Greece
  • Accommodation during the 5-day summer school
  • Course materials and access to facilities
  • Some meals and social activities
Note: Grant allocation is competitive and based on academic merit, motivation, and financial need. Specific grant amounts vary by country of origin according to Erasmus+ regulations.
